Back with more updates (and a shit ton of pictures hehe)!
Last sunday morning (very early, Tanika and I came straight from work!) we were off to Kangaroo Island. We were going to stay with Lachy's (a friend we used to work with) dad at his farm over Christmas. All very excited but super tired we left, and practically slept the whole way haha. It takes about 2 hours to get to the ferry, 45 minutes on the ferry and then another 40 minutes or so to get to Lachy's dad's place.
The farm is a sheep farm, for both meat and wool purposes, so as you can imagine there were heaps of sheep! As we arrived the sheep were being dipped in chemicals to prevent lice and such, so we got to help a bit and do a little sheep herding (..or watching, but oh well). We went for a ride on the farm which includes big fields, heaps of ponds and a lot of trees - which of course meant we had to find a wild koala. We did end up finding a small one in a smaller tree, and it was very exciting for us foreigners (and Tanika who hadn't seen one since she was a kid. Also I kinda count her as a foreigner now as well, since she gets just as excited about everything as I do, yaaaaay!!)
Monday we did some of all the things you have to do on Kangaroo Island. We went to Admirals Arch and Remarkable rocks, which both had amazing views! At Admirals Arch there were heaps of seals very close by as well, and the water was absolutely amazing. Remarkable rocks was awesome, it's a huge stone formation that have been formed by weather and water, and they're just fun to climb basically. We spend a lot of time just climbing and chilling on the rocks enjoying the amazing view haha. We also went and tried to spot a platypus or two in some dams, but all we saw were a lot of bubbles.. so we ended up leaving after spending a long time looking for bubbles hehe.
After that we got some lunch and then went to stokes bay, one of the amazing beaches on the island where you have to go through "caves" to enter the beach.
Tuesday we carried on with the touristy stuff and started with visiting Kelly Hill Caves, which are some underground caves in that area. It was very interesting, even though I spend most of the time being mad at my camera for running flat even though it was full in the morning. Always happens to me... The weather was really good tuesday and after the caves we went and hired some sand boards and headed to little sahara, which is some huge sand dunes on the island. I managed to trick my camera so we could still take pictures (yes, it has done it to me that many times), and we went sand boarding on the dunes. It was so much fun! Although it was kinda tough walking back up the dune after a ride down haha. And I honestly have no idea how I could brake my wrist snowboarding, since I kicked ass on the sand board (I'd like to think that at least, so no comments pleaseee). After a few hours on the dunes we went to grab some lunch and then spend the rest of the day on the beach just chilling, since the weather was really nice.
Also tuesday was actually christmas eve, which was seriously weird to Katja and I. In Australia they don't do much special on christmas eve, so we didn't feel it at all. We almost forgot it was christmas acutally haha!
Wednesday was Christmas day, which is what they celebrate in Australia. Katja and I got up super early in order to talk to our family back home on Christmas eve and open the presents Katja brought from Denmark. I got money, which was exactly what I wanted, since I needed some contributions to my roundtrip in March with Christina. Also before we left Adelaide Tanika and her parents had gotten me and Katja some really Australian touristy things as a Christmas present, I even got a blow up kangaroo, which is basically the most amazing thing ever haha! I'm very happy about those gifts :) Back on track - Katja and I slept some more, and then got up. We then went to take the four wheeler for a spin and kayaking in the dams, while Lachy's dad prepared the Christmas lunch. It was delicious! (just as the rest of the meals we had on the farm). For desert we had Pavlova, which is just amazing, no other words to describe it. We had the lunch outside in 28 degrees, and it was just fantastic. Lachy's dad Paul even got us girls a bottle of vodka from a local distillery, which was way over the top. Bot Paul and Lachy's sister Shannon were such nice people, and I felt really lucky to be able to spend Christmas with them, my good friends and my lovely sister.
After lunch we went to the beach and spend the rest of the afternoon swimming and sun bathing. Who ever thought christmas could be spend like that? It was truly an awesome experience! For dinner we had huge prawns that we peeled and ate on the porch while we watched the sunset. Amazing right? (we then had to run in since the mosquitos ate us up, but shhhhh..)
Christmas day was perfect, so different, but still one of the best ones I've ever had :)
Thursday morning we got up, decided we didn't really feel like doing anything, found out that there was a series made from the movie "how to train your dragon", and that there was a marathon on that morning. So we basically watched that for a good three hours until we decided to head out for some lunch and beach time. The afternoon was spend at the beach just relaxing. Katja and I spend it on the rocks a bit out in the water, since that was the only place that didn't have flies. Seriously the flies in Australia are so persistent. They don't go away. Ever. They will hunt you until they're able to crawl into your ear, mouth, eye, nose, etc. Now imagine about 40 doing that at the same time. I wouldn't be surprised if there's actually been people that have gone mental because of them. Anyway we chilled at the rocks and then went back, since we were going to the local pub for dinner. Katja and I tried a chicken parmi for the first time, which is a chicken schnitzel with tomato sauce, ham and cheese on top, and the definition of Australian pub food basically. It was yummyyyy. Oh how I love food... We rented a couple of movies, Monty Python and the holy grail (you can't hate that movie) and Black sheep (a pretty horrible, yet funny horror movie about killer sheep haha).
Friday we were heading back home, but made a few stops on the way to have lunch and some vine tastings. We also went to a few local shops/farms as the vodka distillery, a eucalyptus distillery and so on during the week, which I absolutely loved. It was an amazing week and we got to see so much! We had such a fun time with awesome people and it has definitely been one of my favorite things that I've done in Australia!
After returning home we went to work, and Katja went out with some of the people that weren't working. Yesterday we went up to the hills to spend some time with them, and today Katja and I went to Cleeland Conservation Park so she could get to feed some kangaroos as well. The weather was awesome, so it's been a really good day! I'm so glad to have her here, we are having so much fun together and I can tell how much I've missed her. We've been so busy over Christmas that we haven't really gotten to miss home at all, which is really really nice, I like that hehe.
December has gone so fast, it's crazy! Time is flying by, and soon I'll be heading out on a trip of a lifetime with Christina! I'm so excited, and it's only 1.5 months away now. Weeeee! At the same time I'm a bit sad that time is going by so quickly. That means I have to leave Adelaide and everyone I've met here. Leave work, which will be so sad, since I really enjoy it there more than I've done any other place. Well.. All good things come to an end, and I will enjoy the time I have left to the fullest and look forward to the experiences that lay ahead of me! :) Also I've told Tan that she has no other choice than to come study in Denmark, so I know I'll be seeing her again very soon hehe! ;-)
PS beware of a picture overload!
